The Lacuna Worm (named after the greek word for Gap or Hole) is a highly dangerous creature that bridges the biological division between predator and parasite.
Adults enter the body through a facial orifice and painfully make their way to the brain of the still screaming victim, where it will begin secreting a potent chemical cocktail of aggressor response hormones and neuro-inhibitors as the worm begins its destructive life cycle.
The course of Infection- Initial effects- Minutes after infection cognition begins to deteriorate as the parasite bores through the victim's brain matter. Subsequently, infected individuals will become violently erratic as the worm feeds on the brain and begins to release millions of unhatched eggs into the body.
Hour 1- The young worms will begin spread through the human's system, consuming non-essential bodily functions first in order to ensure the host's continued survival.
Hour 2- At this stage the host is highly infectious, as their aggressive behavior spreads infant worms from contact with mucus membranes.
Hour 5- The host has had most bodily functions either destroyed or replaced by a network of now adolescent worms. In some cases infected individuals were found to have almost no musculature left, as dozens of worms wrapped tightly around the skeleton provided the host locomotion in the form of their coordinated tugging.
Hour 7- The host will die when the brain is finally consumed, spontaneously toppling over as hundreds of mature worms spill out of the empty shell of skin and bone. Each one ready to begin the cycle anew.
Full blown outbreaks are rare, typically because the directionless violence of infected individuals often results in their early destruction at the hands of law enforcement or victims that choose not to be victimized. And because of the speed of the infectious agent, most incidences are poorly documented.
The picture above was the notes by a physician in London who encountered the Lacuna worm and was subsequently infected. This along with precious few other scraps of information are all that we have in the war against this deadly and opportunistic creature.
*This was a sketch done on the back of a test yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.... I'm planning on redrawing and reuploading this creature at some point, but for now this is it.
